 Gravity-Dispensing Tote Setup​ for B100 

If you're passionate about 100% biodiesel and looking for an efficient, low-cost way to store and dispense your fuel, a gravity-fed tote system is a great solution. This setup allows you to transfer biodiesel to a vehicle or jerry can without the need for electric pumps.

This guideline is an example of experience shared by one of our co-op members who successfully built and used this system. Below, you'll find a breakdown of the necessary components, estimated costs, and key steps to help you create a safe and effective dispensing setup. Whether you're new to biodiesel or an experienced user, this guide offers valuable insights to streamline your fueling process while keeping costs low.​

​​​Setup Steps for Gravity-Dispensing Tote System

  • (1) Position the Tote:
    • Place an empty tote on a sturdy, level platform (approximately 24” or 60 cm high) to allow gravity to dispense fuel into a vehicle or jerry can.
    • Do not attempt to move a full tote—it is heavy, difficult to handle, and poses safety risks when positioning.
  • (2) Purchase Necessary Components:
    • Acquire the appropriate couplings, fuel line, and nozzle for your setup.
    • Take a photo of the tote spout before visiting Greenline (or a similar fitting shop), as there are three different types of tote fittings. The shop can help you find the correct end fitting and hose.
    • Note: Auto shutoff nozzles do not work with gravity-fed systems—use a manual fuel nozzle instead.
  • (3) Install a Moisture-Absorbing Top Cap:
    • Construct a vented top-cap system to absorb moisture and allow air to escape.
    • A simple solution includes using a pipe filled with silica cat litter (desiccant) covered with mesh to prevent debris from entering.
  • (4) Protect the Tote from Environmental Factors:
    • Cover the tote to shield it from sunlight and moisture, which can degrade biodiesel over time.
  • (5) Prevent Pest Issues:
    • Check for leaks regularly, as biodiesel can attract rodents. Properly sealing connections and storing the system in a secure location can help deter pests.

Material & Compatibility​

  • Hose & Fittings: Not all materials are suitable for biodiesel. Choose Viton or PTFE-lined hoses to prevent degradation over time.
  • Desiccant Vent: A moisture-absorbing top cap (e.g., a pipe filled with silica cat litter and mesh) helps prevent water contamination while allowing proper venting.

  • Use Affordable Materials: Many components, like the platform, can be built from scrap materials, reducing overall costs.
